Our Breeding Philosophy
We are continually working to improve the Babydoll Southdown Breed, and particularly our own flock.
This is why, though our flock is small, we have three rams to choose from so that we can combine the best traits from our rams with the ewe that compliments them. Breeding is an ongoing process of looking at the best traits and the worst traits of each sheep and matching them with the correct breeding partner in order to produce a better Babydoll in the next generation. There are times we don't breed a ewe because we don't have a good match for her, or there are times one of our rams doesn't get a turn because we don't have a good match for him. It is important to be willing not to breed when you don't have the right qualities in your breeding pairs.
We are also looking to improve the quality of wool our Babydolls produce, so this is another characteristic we pay attention to. Currently, we are getting some beautiful natural colors and very soft wool.
Excellent Confirmation
Babydoll Southdown Sheep should have a wide head and the typical Babydoll smile with the ears set level with the poll and of medium length. They should be between 18" & 24" tall and have a stocky build with a more square body type. Babydolls are also polled, meaning they have no horns. Traditional Babydolls have fine wool that is off-white or black. However, the elements can affect the final color of the wool.
Sweet, Easy-going Temperaments
Babydoll Southdown Sheep are a very docile breed. Also, because of their stature they are easier to handle and care for. They can be a little skittish, at times, but warm up to their humans quickly. They are easy to train to come to grain, but be careful because they put on weight very easily.
Hearty & Wooly
The Babydoll Southdown is a British Breed that was bred in order to put on weight quickly and efficiently for meat production. They are easy keepers and they are generally very healthy, low maintenance sheep.
Their wool is a superior, fine wool that was, at one time, used for under garments and clothing that was worn directly against the skin.
